Substation Checker — IEC 61850 client and master conformance test suite
Simulate one IED or two hundred, then see whether your master station keeps up.
The mirror image of the IED checker: it presents standardised device data and behaviour — one device or a whole station — so you can test the master station, the gateway, the communication unit or the substation controller that consumes it.
Operation areas tested
- Association operations
- Directory operations
- Data set operations — all functions
- Buffered reporting — operations and report handling
- Unbuffered reporting — operations and report handling
- Log handling — all functions
- Setting group operations
- Single set-point operations
- Control operations
- File operations
- Read/write, including multiple operations
Why the scenarios matter more than the checklist
A master station that reads a live device once proves very little. What breaks in service is scale and adversity: hundreds of devices changing state at the same moment, a network that drops for thirty seconds, a device that answers slowly while the rest are fast. The suite reproduces those conditions on demand.
Model import closes the loop: bring in the station model, let the tool generate the matching server simulator, and the same data set the engineering department designed is the one being exercised.
- Data storm and network storm simulation
- Network interruption and recovery
- Limits by single node, by specified data volume, by specified system scale
- Automatic verification of data correctness and timeliness

Frequently asked
Does it test our gateway or our master station?
Both. Any system that acts as a 61850 client — access controller, integrated processing unit, communication manager, communication substation, master station — can be exercised against simulated devices.
How many devices can be simulated?
Simulation is limited by the test machine rather than the protocol. For a full-station test, tell us the device count and data volume and we will size the configuration.
Can it be used during acceptance of a third-party system?
Yes, and that is a common use: the simulator defines the expected behaviour, and the report documents where the delivered system deviated from it.
