SSD Studio — graphic single-line diagram and SCL model in one artefact

Draw the primary single-line diagram; get a valid IEC 61850 SSD model out of the same file.

SSD Studio joins two artefacts that are normally maintained separately: the primary single-line diagram and the IEC 61850 system specification description. Model and drawing are stored together, so the drawing is not a picture of the model — it is the model.

The communication problem it solves

A substation design is agreed between the owner, the design institute, the primary equipment vendor, the secondary equipment vendor and the integrator. Each of them used to hold a different view of the same station: a drawing in one tool, a model in another, a spreadsheet of virtual terminals in a third.

Because the SSD carries the primary diagram, the primary equipment information, the secondary equipment configuration and the logic node bindings in one standard file, that file becomes the shared reference — and the virtual terminal table is generated rather than transcribed.

  • Vector drawing, editing and saving with component support
  • IEC 61850 logic node library built in, and importable
  • Logic nodes automatically bound to primary equipment
  • Secondary equipment function and virtual terminal tables generated from the model

Simulation hand-off

MATLAB simulation models can be converted into SSD models with a generated diagram, which means a control or protection scheme validated in simulation arrives at the substation as a standard model instead of a document to be re-keyed.

Frequently asked

Is the generated SSD standard-compliant?

Yes — the tool writes standard IEC 61850 SSD, and imports standard SSD produced elsewhere for re-editing.

Do we have to redo existing drawings?

Not necessarily. Import the SSD you already have and the diagram is regenerated for editing; the model is preserved.

Does it replace an SCL editor?

It covers the system specification level (SSD) and the diagram side. For device-level CID/ICD configuration, the ICD tool shipped with the SDKs is the appropriate companion.
